WHAT ARE THE CAUSES AND SYMPTOMS OF HIGH BLOOD SUGAR (HYPERGLYCEMIA)

Hyperglycemia or High blood sugar can affect people with both type 1 and type 2 diabetes and it is a major concern, and necessary for people to know it's causes, symptoms, and remedies. there are two main kinds, that is:
Fasting hyperglycemia: this is when the blood sugar is above 7.2mmol/l (130 mg/dl) after not eating or taking water for at least eight(8) hours.

Postprandial (after-meal hyperglycemia): this is blood sugar that is above 10mmol/l (180mg/dl) when tested two hours after you have eaten. Blood sugar levels for people without diabetes after a meal is rarely over 7.8mmol/l (140mg/dl).

If you have frequent high blood glucose (hyperglycemia) it can cause damage to your blood vessels, nerves, and organs. it can also lead to some complications or serious conditions. people with type 1with type 1 diabetes are prone to Ketoacidosis (it is a build-up of acids in the blood)
For people with type 2 diabetes or at risk of it too because too high blood sugar can lead to a complicated and a potentially deadly condition in which your blood will not be able to process glucose (sugar) which is called HHNS (hyperglycemia hyperosmolar nonketotic syndrome.you will urinate (pee) more often at first, and later on less often, but your urine may become dark and you will be highly dehydrated.it is crucial to treat symptoms bank to know the causes of high blood sugar to help prevent complications.

CAUSES OF HIGH BLOOD SUGAR 
your blood sugar level may rise if the following occurs:

  • If you are ill
  • if you are stressed
  • if you have infection
  • if you eat too many carbohydrates
  • if you do not engage in physical activities (exercise)
  • if you forget or skip your insulin or sugar-lowering medicine
  • taking part in strenuous exercise especially when your blood glucose levels are high and insulin levels are low.
SYMPTOMS
early signs include:
  • blurred vision
  • weakness
  • weight loss
  • headaches
  • trouble concentrating
  • peeing frequently
  • if tested the blood sugar level;l will be above 10mmol/l (180mg/dl)
SYMPTOMS:
Long term complication and ongoing high blood sugar may cause:
  • worse vision
  • slow healing sores and cuts
  • damage your eyes, kidneys and blood vessels
  • nerve damage causing serious painful cold or incentive feet, loos of hair on the lower extremities, and even erection dysfunction
  • stomach and intestine problems like constipation or diarrhea.
PREVENTIONS
For early signs:
  • drink more water: water will help you remove excess sugar from your blood through urine and will keep you hydrated.
  • Exercise more: Exercise can help lower your blood sugar but in some cases it can make it go higher, there always consult your physician(Doctor)

note: for people with type 1 diabetes, when your blood sugar is high, you need to check your urine for ketones, please do not exercise both applies to those with type 2 diabetes too.


  •  Change your eating habit: you have to meet a dietician to change your meal plan to suit your present health condition
  • Switch medications: your physician can decide to change your medications type, amount, and time.
  • It is advisable to call your doctor if your blood sugar is above 13.9mmol/l (250mg/dl); please call your doctor.
HOW TO PREVENT DIABETES
  • Knowing your diet by always checking the amount of carbs in a meal or snack
  • always test your blood sugar level regularly
  • if you have repeated abnormal blood sugar readings please call your physician
  • always wear a medical identification to enable people to know your health status in case of emergency
